About

About the course

Course content

The module divides the traditional Norwegian repertoire of collective group dance into four different topics:
• Round Dances and Singing Games.
• Figure Dances and Song Dances.
• Dances from the 20th century.
• Regional Dances.
Each student chooses the topic that she/he has not chosen before as Methodology of Traditional Dance IV. This serves as a starting point for the study of traditional dance technique and practical instruction. Instruction in each topic is partly a practical introduction to dance technique and instruction technique for the particular genre, and partly instructional training. There are four different topics to choose between, and students will develop a written and well thought out plan for the instruction of a limited selection of dances from their chosen topic. In addition, the student should offer instruction in a dance from each area. The student chooses two of the four topics for Methodology of Traditional Dance I and II, which will serve as the basis for a concentrated study (major). The student can then choose the last two topics, or just one of them, for Methodology of Traditional Dance III and IV, as optional topics of concentrated study (major). Methodology of Traditional Dance IV is thus an optional topic for concentrated study of the methodology of traditional dance, regardless of its content.
All topics will have joint lectures where the students get an introduction into methods and problems related to the teaching of all kinds of traditional Norwegian dance for children, youths and adults.

Learning outcome

Students should develop an analytical and practical approach to traditional dance technique in the material covered by the specific topic. They should also be able to reflect on and form and evaluate theories related to the instruction technique for the selected dance genre.
