About the course

Course content

The subject provides a brief introduction to the theory and history of aesthetics, with a basis in dance and a concentrated study of European dance history, including a look at other parts of the world. The study involves simple practical exercises and an examination of illustrative material on video and other sources. The students will be given an introduction into work analysis, source criticism and the interpretation of sources. Students will work individually and in groups with historic source material from portfolio exercises.

Learning outcome

The students will aquire an understanding of European dance history and dance history theory formation. They will learn source criticism and the interpretation of dance history source material, as well as gain insight into various perspectives on the study of dance.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, practical classes, groups.
Assessment: The students are required to submit portfolio assignments to be assessed as a whole at the end of the teaching semester. The portfolio should include an answer to one source history exercise answered through discussion groups and a subsequent presentation in class. It will also include two sets exercises, at least one work analysis. The classroom exercise can be replaced with answers submitted as assignments. The three sets count for the same. Failing the portfolio assignment entails submitting the entire portfolio again.
