Course content

English for Academic Purposes is a language course at B1-B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course aims to improve students’ English language proficiency and academic English language skills relevant for studying in the Norwegian higher education system, or fulfill the English language requirement for international master's studies.

In the spring semester of 2024, this course is only available for applicants with refugee status.

Learning outcome

The student’s level of knowledge is equivalent to B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

SKILLS

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • interact confidently in English with others on a wide variety of topics.
  • read and comprehend academic texts in English.
  • have knowledge about characteristics of academic writing.
  • write well-structured academic texts using appropriate English language.
  • give oral presentations in English.
  • Improve their English grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation to support clear written and oral communication.
  • be familiar with the IELTS test format.

Learning methods and activities

6 hours of seminars/group work in total per week, at 2 times 3 hours, including listening exercises. Students need to submit and have 3 written assignments and one oral presentation approved during the course.

Attendance is compulsory at the first lecture.

  • 80% mandatory attendance

Further on evaluation

Pass/ Fail. To pass, students need to have all compulsory assignments approved and meet the attendance requirement.

The transcript of records of this course cannot be used as official documentation of English skills at level B2.

An IELTS test will be offered at the end of the course, provided there are at least 10 candidates for it.

Required previous knowledge

B1 level in English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), or Samordna Opptak's minimum English language requirement.
