About the course

Course content

Assimilation, integration and segregation. How these different approaches for dealing with ethnic diversity may be desirable, acceptable or unfortunate in various areas. Introduction to multicultural approaches and discussion about these. Experience with intercultural meetings between pupils of differing ethnicity in Norwegian schools.

Learning outcome

The student
- is familiar with and can apply the conceptual framework around intercultural meetings and various strategies for coping with ethnic diversity.
- has knowledge of assimilation, integration and segregation as empirical phenomena in Norway.
- knows the main features of the theories about ethnic diversity/intercultural meetings.
- can discuss rhetoric and reality in respect of multiculturalism and tolerance.
- can discuss the consequences that various immigration policy choices may have for schools generally and the social science subjects in particular.
