About the course

Course content

The course gives students an introduction to central areas related to the study of modern English language, for example morphology, semantics, syntax, phonetics, phonology and pragmatics. The different aspects are dealt with through discussions of basic ideas and themes within the above-mentioned subject areas. The course provides the students with concepts and ideas used to describe and analyse the English language, as well as a theoretical insight into the language system.

Learning outcome

Candidates who have passed this course
- have basic theoretical insight into the system of language
- have basic knowledge of at least three of the four main subfields of linguistic analysis (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics/pragmatics) as these relate to the study of the modern English language
- have knowledge of basic concepts and ideas and linguistic terminology commonly used to describe and analyse the English language
- have the knowledge of linguistics necessary to be able to read and understand undergraduate-level academic/scientific texts dealing with topics in descriptive and theoretical linguistics and adjacent fields
- are able to apply some basic linguistic terms and concepts from at least three linguistic subfields to describe and analyse English language data.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminar sessions, supervision. It's learning. The lectures cover central issues in the course, whereas the seminar sessions give students the opportunity to solve exercises. Supervision is offered in connection to compulsory assignments. It is a prerequisite that the students use It's learning on a regular basis.

Compulsory assignments

  • 2 written assignments consisting of 4-5 tasks each
