Course - Text and Argumentation - EXFAC0008
Text and Argumentation
About
About the course
Course content
The course is partly theoretical and partly practical. An introduction to basic argumentation theory is provided, focussing on different argumentative forms and the evaluation of the strengths and peculiarities of different kinds of argument. Common inferential mistakes are also taken up. The relationiship between language and meaning is discussed and exemplified by reference to the themes of definition and the interpretation of sentences. The course also provides a short introduction to the concepts of rhetoric and genre analysis, as well as how to evaluate information and sources in a critical manner. The practical side of the course consists partly of applying theory to academic texts, and partly through students' own work with analysis and production of texts.
Learning outcome
The course aims to provide students with an introduction to the intellectual and written tradition of our academic culture. It also seeks to train them up in reading, understanding and critically evaluating academic texts, as well as evaluating documents as sources of information. Students will gain acquaintance with some theoretical tools that will be of use in later academic studies and professional life, connected first and foremost with argumentation, documentation and the objective presentation of ideas. The course will put the student in a position to understand how an academic text is built up, to identify its central problem or theme, to analyse central arguments in the text and critically to assess it.
