About the course

Course content

The course is for Master's students who have pre-approved study-abroad as part of their Master's in Philosophy and Ethics.

The course is an independent study with a prescribed curriculum of approx. 650 pages.

Learning outcome

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills):

Knowledge

  • The candidate has in-depth knowledge of a particular topic/problem area, or a particular philosopher/topic in the history of philosophy of relevance to the student's master thesis.

Skills

  • Compared to specialization courses at bachelor's level, students at master's level are expected to demonstrate a greater degree of independence in their dealings with philosophical research questions.
  • The candidate has the ability to orient themselves in an extensive literature, and find complementary literature of relevance to the chosen topic or research question.
  • The candidate has the ability to solve the research question through an independent written assignment, with clear argumentation/discussion, under supervision.

Learning methods and activities

Self study, supervision. Approved reading list must be handed in to the Department.

Further on evaluation

The assessment is based on an essay (2000-4000 words). Students are strongly advised to submit a draft version of their essay to their teacher/supervisor for feedback prior to final submission.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Philosophy and Ethics (MFI) - some programmes

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Master's programme in Philosophy and Ethics.
