Course content
FILM2202 is an undergraduate course that further develops the student's analytical understanding and independent application of film studies perspectives. The student chooses their bachelor thesis topic in line with one of the perspectives taught in the course.
The course is taken at the end of the bachelor program and it prepares students for studies on the master level.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:
- selected film analytical approaches
- a self-selected theme
- producing scholarly work
Skills
After completing the course, the student can:
- apply film analytical approaches
- conduct advanced and independent film analyses
- reflect on film theoretical arguments and the consequences of theoretical choices
- plan and carry out an independent film studies project
- present and justify issues in film studies, own findings, analyses and conclusions
- write a scholarly text
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, screenings, student presentations and supervision in seminars and individually.
Obligatory activities: Seminar participation including an oral presentation on the theme of one’s bachelor thesis and feedback on fellow students' submissions.
Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but English can also occur.

Final assessment consists of a written bachelor's thesis of 5000-6000 words and an adjusting oral examination. In the oral discussion, which lasts for 25 minutes, the student will have the opportunity to defend and self-evaluate their thesis. In the oral exam, the student will also be tested on the course's assigned syllabus.
If the student fails the final assessment, both parts of the exam must be retaken. In this case, the thesis must have a new theme formulation. FILM2202 is taught only in the spring semester.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Film Studies (BFV)
Film and Video Production (BFVPROD)
Required previous knowledge
Admission to the bachelor's programme in Film Studies or Film and Video Production, and a specialization in Film Studies (a minimum of 75 credits) or in Film and Video Production (a minimum of 105 credits).
Course materials
The syllabus is approximately 1200 pages, of which 900 pages are assigned and 300 are selected by the student from a list of proposed literature. In addition, films, episodes and programs will be shown in their entirety as part of the lectures.
