Learning outcome

Knowledge

  • The student will have knowledge of how saving in housing and other asset classes affects personal finances in different phases of life.
  • The student will have knowledge of how personal taxation affects personal decisions and personal finances.
  • The student will have knowledge of the time value of money and how it affects the profitability of investments.
  • The student will have knowledge of the connections between risk and expected return.
  • The student will have knowledge of how family law issues related to inheritance, marriage and cohabitation can affect personal finances.
  • The student will have knowledge of basic financial products.

Skill

  • The student should be able to do calculations on the profitability of personal investments and savings.
  • Students should be able to compare different loan options and calculate effective interest rates.
  • Students should be able to interpret and make decisions about investments and savings based on various profitability goals.
  • The student should know which variables are relevant to decisions in personal investments and savings.
  • The student should be able to carry out calculations related to personal tax.
  • The student should be able to carry out calculations related to pensions and public benefits.

General competence

  • The student should understand that the organization of the tax system has social significance.
  • The student should be able to reflect on the connections between, personal finances, consumption and sustainability.
  • The student should be able to apply knowledge of personal finance in practical situations.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures. Students should work on assignments to learn the course material. Students are encouraged to work in groups.

Further on evaluation

Permitted aids for the exam: Interest rate table and approved calculator in accordance with NTNU's aids code B-D "specific simple calculator". Other calculators allowed in the course are: Casio FC-100V and Texas Instruments - BAII Plus.
