About the course

Course content

The course is an introduction to research theories and methods for master's students in Film and Media Studies and Film and Video Production.

Teaching and readings focus on research traditions in the humanities and other relevant issues in theories of knowledge production.

In the seminars, students will receive guidance in their research design and in choosing methods appropriate to their individual thesis projects.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course the student will have:
- knowledge of the main theories and research traditions in the humanities and key research traditions in film and media studies.
- knowledge of significant issues in the relationships between different research traditions.
- knowledge of the distinctiveness of the humanities.
- knowledge of MA theses in film and media studies, with regards to method, form, structure and genre.

Skills
Upon successful completion of the course the student will know how to:
- reflect on key issues in the history and theories of the humanities.
- discuss significant issues in the relationship between different research traditions.
- reflect on theories and methods for their own master's thesis.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English.

Obligatory activity:
Students will present a chosen theoretical position in the seminars, by agreement with the instructor.

Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.

The final assessment consist of a 3-day home exam, which will be letter graded. The scope of the exam will be decided by the course director.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Film Studies (MFILM)
Film and Media Studies (MFMV)
Film and Videoproduction (MMPROD)
Media Studies (MMVIT)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to one of the master's programmes in Film and Video Production or Film and Media Studies.
