Course content

Students conduct some basic experimental phonetic investigations, with a focus on evaluating their observations and presenting the results in a sensible and clear manner.

Learning outcome

After the course the participants:
- are familiar with elementary methods for analysing and manipulating speech signals
- are able to perform more advanced experimental-phonetic investigations
- are familiar with the relevant phonetic literature
- are able to use relevant software for data processing under supervision
- are able to present phonetic research questions and convey the results of phonetic investigations

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, group instructions and laboratory exercises with supervision. The course may be taught in English or Norwegian, depending on who is participating.
Mandatory exercises must be approved before the final grade is given.

Compulsory assignments

  • • 3-5 laboratory exercises

Further on evaluation

Assessment: Bachelor's thesis and oral exam. The thesis should be between 15 and 25 pages (line spacing 1.5). The bachelor's thesis is based on the mandatory exercises. In the final grade, the bachelor's thesis counts 70 % and the oral examination 30 %. Both the oral examination and the bachelor's thesis must be passed in order to pass the course. If the course is not passed, the student must retake both parts of the exam.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
