Course content
This course is a general introductory course in French, mostly focused on intensive training in written and oral French. The course provides an introduction to French history and literature, and it allows students to pursue further French studies.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
Candidates who have passed this course:
- are familiar with a selection of both literary works and non-fiction works related to French history
- have knowledge about the important epochs in French history
Skills
Candidates who have passed this course:
- are able to make use of basic approaches to textual analysis
- can write about French history and literature in French
- can discuss historical and literary topics in French
General competence
Candidates who have passed this course:
- possess basic textual competences
- know how to make correct use of and cite sources
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and seminars with discussions. Study groups. Written proficiency training. The course is taught in French.
75% mandatory attendance (in lectures and seminars)
The absence limit is intended to cover normal sick leave and similar situations. Therefore, you will not be granted valid absence from teaching based on a medical certificate, even if the absence is due to circumstances beyond your control.
In special cases, agreements for exemption can be made with the course coordinator, preferably at the start of the semester.
Obligatory assignments: 4 assignments; the format of the individual assignments may vary depending on the course plan.
Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
Compulsory assignments

- 75% attendance in all teaching activities
Further on evaluation
The exam must be answered in French. Information about which dictionaries, if any, you are allowed to consult during the written exam will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester.
Recommended previous knowledge
We recommend proficiency in French equivalent to French level II from Upper Secondary School/Norwegian "videregående skole".
