About the course

Course content

The course is an introduction to central aspects of French grammar, such as basic syntax and verb morphology. Students practice basic syntactic analyses. The focus of the course is the relationship between the syntax of the sentence and its constituents, for example different types of word phrases and the use of pronouns.
The course also gives an introduction to and training in central rules for pronunciation in French. Students will use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to transcribe simple texts. The main focus is on the relationship between orthography and pronunciation.
Teaching involves group work and student’s active participation in solving practical and theoretical exercises.

Learning outcome

Candidates who have passed the course
- Are proficient in elementary syntactic analysis and morphology
- Can recognize French tense forms
- Can explain basic differences in Norwegian and French word order
- Can transcribe simple French texts
- Are proficient in the central rules of pronunciation in French

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and group sessions. Oral and written proficiency training. Students are expected to actively participate in seminars, group sessions and presentations.
The course is taught in French.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Compulsory assignments

  • 80% attendance in all teaching activities
  • 8 tests targeting verb conjugation
  • 1 assignment in phonology
  • 2 short assignments in grammar

Further on evaluation

-Oral examination in phonology, ca. 20 minutes, with 30 minutes preparation time. This exam counts for 30% of the grade.
- Written exam in grammar (4 hours). This exam counts for 70% of the grade.
Both parts of the exam are graded together. Failing one part of the exam entails failing the whole course. Students who fail must sit both parts again.

The exam must be answered in French. Information about which dictionaries, if any, you are allowed to consult during the written exam will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester.
