About

About the course

Course content

A theoretical course where central issues in French linguistics are studied. Focus will be on studying the interaction between syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

Learning outcome

Candidates who have passed this course
- are able to explain different ways of elaborating on and rephrasing French clauses (e.g. subordinate clauses, passives and nonfinite clauses).
- are able to analyse complex phrases using precise terminology.
- are able to explain the interplay between syntax and pragmatics, e.g. the information structure of a text.
- are familiar with contrasts between Norwegian and French and are able to make use of these to create complex phrases in both written and spoken French.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and group sessions with discussion.
Approved obligatory assignments are only valid for the semester in which the approval is given. All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Compulsory assignments

  • 1 written assignment related to the term paper.
  • 2 short assignments

Further on evaluation

Assessment: Term paper (approx. 6 pages) and oral examination (approx. 20 minutes). The oral examination adjusts the grade given for the term paper, but failing one part of the exam entails failing the whole course. Students who fail must retake both parts.

In semesters where FRA2301 is not taught, NTNU will not be offering a resit examination.

Course materials

The reading list will be available at the beginning of the semester.
