About the course

Course content

The topic of the thesis should be within one of the three disciplines of French as taught in Norwegian universities. Alternatively, students may choose an interdisciplinary topic. The students should further develop their proficiency in French as well as their understanding of texts and academic writing. They should practise information processing, collection of empirical data and evaluation of research and methods within a relevant subject. The thesis may be written in cooperation with an external business or organisation.

The bachelor's thesis must be written in French and consist of between 4000 and 6000 words, excluding references and appendices. All students must write an abstract of the thesis (max. 1/2 page). The abstract will be written in Norwegian and be placed first in the document, before the table of contents.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, group sessions and supervision. In group sessions and under academic supervision the students will select a research question, a reading list and write a project outline. The teaching will be organised with consideration to the students' topics and available supervision resources.

- Approved topic, project outline and preliminary bibliography (1 page max.), in French

- Minimum two individual supervision sessions

- Oral presentation of the thesis in French

Further on evaluation

The bachelor's thesis must be written in French. The final assessment of the thesis is adjusted through an oral defense in French of about 30 minutes. The oral examination will be cancelled if the bachelor's thesis has been failed by the examiners. Students who fail the exam must retake both parts.

Students who have previously completed the bachelor’s thesis are not allowed to submit a new thesis in semesters where this course is not taught/no supervision is offered. Students who did not pass the exam, or who did not complete the exam due to illness may submit the exam in a semester where this course is not taught; however, they will not receive any additional supervision. Students who wish to retake the course either because of a failing grade, or to improve their grade, must submit a new thesis on a new topic.

Required previous knowledge

Pass in a FRA2000-course within the same academic subdiscipline as the discipline that is the topic of the thesis (literature, linguistics or cultural history).

Course materials

Curriculum / reading list will be announced at the beginning of the semester. The reading list will include compulsory reading as well as syllabus selected by the student in consultation with the academic supervisor.
