About

About the course

Course content

FVP3200 i a 3rd and 4th semester course at master's level, where the student produces a practical Master's Production and theoretical Master's Thesis

Practical part: Master's Production

The Master's Production is a substantial fiction or documentary project at a professional production and technical level. The production constitutes an experiential disciplinary immersion and exploration of one or more film production roles. As a standard, the Master's Production is produced as a team project, but can under certain conditions also be realised as an individual project.

The practical part of the work in the course builds upon the foundations developed by the students in the 1st and 2nd semester, in the courses FVP3010 Development of Ideas, Projects and Artistic Research and FVP3003 Preproduction course for Master's Production, respectively.

Theoretical part: Master's Thesis

The theoretical master's thesis is an independent written work that can be compared in scope and depth to a short scientific article. The master's thesis must show that the candidate can define and investigate a production related film studies argument in a way that constitutes a new contribution to research in the field.

The theoretical part of the work in the course builds upon the foundation developed by the student in the 2nd semester in the course FVP3100 Master's Thesis Development.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have

  • knowledge of practical-theoretical issues related to developing, planning and completing large-scale film- and video productions
  • in-depth knowledge of the practical, production related areas of expertise the Master's Production actualises
  • in-depth knowledge of specific fields within film studies that the self-selected topic of the Master's Thesis focuses upon

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have the ability to

  • independently plan, develop and lead the work of large-scale film- and video productions (Master's Production)
  • independently manage and exercise one or more self-selected film production roles connected to the realisation of the Master's Production
  • independently formulate, plan and carry out a research-based written work (Master's Thesis)
  • communicate their reasoning in adequate professional language, use relevant theories and methods in an appropriate way, and according to academic standards
  • reflect critically on one's own professional practice and adjust this under supervision

Learning methods and activities

Individual and team based supervision of production work, and individual supervision of the written thesis.

The volume of the thesis is approximately 6000 words. The number of words does not include front page, preface, table of content, literature and attachments. The word numbers must be added to the thesis, and the student is responsible for its accuracy. All students must write an abstract of the thesis of approx. 1/2 - 1 page. The abstract should be written in Norwegian and preferably also in English.

Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director via Blackboard. Please see link for the numbers of hours of supervision eligible for your masters thesis https://innsida.ntnu.no/wiki/-/wiki/Norsk/Masteravtale+HF

Further on evaluation

In the final assessment, the master thesis and the master´s production are given separate grades. The two parts are then adjusted through oral exams lasting up to 60 minutes in total. The two parts are weighted, with 75% for the master's production and 25% for the master's thesis in the calculation of the final grade.
