New from the academic year 2026/2027
About
About the course
Course content
In this course, students learn to translate various types of foundational knowledge and skills from the first year of study into practical competence in physiotherapy. This involves developing clinical and practical skills, as well as further developing their personal competence in order to practice physiotherapy as a relational process. Examinations and interventions are based on a gradually more advanced understanding of function, providing insight into possible triggering and maintaining factors of various types of functional impairments, pain conditions, injuries, and diseases. The physiotherapy process is used as a working model throughout the course. Students will learn to distinguish between clinical signs and medical findings and to understand the implications this has for physiotherapy. Different approaches to examination and intervention will reflect an evidence-based practice.

Examination
The course has two partial exams:
Part 1: Written school exam (6 hours): The written school exam shall, in light of the learning outcomes, assess the students' ability to apply theoretical, research-based, and experience-based knowledge in clinical reasoning, e.g., in relation to case study; the what, how, and why of physiotherapy.
Assessed with a grading scale A-F and accounts for 40% of the total grade in the course.
Part 2: Clinical-practical exam (45 minutes): The clinical-practical exam shall, in light of the learning outcomes, assess the students' clinical-practical skills, e.g., in relation to a given clinical problem and context with a fellow student as the "patient".
Assessed with a grading scale A-F and accounts for 60% of the total grade in the course.
A deferred examination is held for students who have documented valid absence, have an exam result of 'not passed', or who have attended the exam and withdrawn during the process.
Approved mandatory activities do not have to be completed again when retaking the examination.
Mandatory activities
During this course, students must complete varied mandatory activities linked to the achievement of learning outcomes and competence development in the course. The following mandatory activities must be completed and approved in order to present oneself for assessment:
Practical exercises with written submission and/or peer assessment: Details will be presented on the course learning platform. If the written work is assessed as 'not approved', one (1) new opportunity is given to rework the assignment.
Seminar days on various subject areas, for example, children and young people's health, and health promotion and prevention. Details will appear in the timetable and the course learning platform. Mandatory seminars require 100% attendance. In case of documented valid absence, an oral or written assignment with a submission deadline set by the subject teacher will be provided.
Skills training lab: 80% attendance is required for scheduled skills training. Absence exceeding 20% means that the student cannot present themselves for assessment in the course.
Clinical placements including preparatory and follow-up work (3rd-semester placement period and 4th-semester placement period): Students shall complete two clinical placement periodns under the supervision of a physiotherapist, including carrying out various learning outcome-controlled activities. Documented valid absence between 11% and 20% can be made up for as an extended placement period by agreement between the placement organization and the university. Absence exceeding 20% for any reason means that the placement period must be retaken.
The third-semester placement must be passed in order to be able to proceed to the fourth-semester placement.
