About the course
Course content
The course deals with statistics (descriptive statistics, correlation, probability, and simple linear regression), graphical presentation methods (in the form of graphs and thematic maps) and remote sensing (use of aerial- and satellite imagery). Through practical exercises the students get insight into possibilities and limitations of quantitative methods and geographical information systems (GIS), and learn basic map design.
Learning outcome
Knowledge: The course provides an introduction to quantitative methods and the use of tabular data, maps and images in geographic information systems (GIS).
Skills: This course provides a practical introduction to preparation and presentation of data in both statistical software packages (SPSS) and geographic information systems (GIS).
General competence: The course encourages critical reflection on method.
Learning methods and activities
6 hours lectures and 4 hours seminar, on-line Learning modules and 14 hours of exercises/project.

Further on evaluation
Both exams must be submitted and passed (graded E or better) to pass the course. Same form of examination is given when re-sitting for the exam. It is possible to re-sit for one out of two exams. Written exam for the course is offered both semesters, while the assignment-part must be taken together and in the same semester when lectured.
