About the course

Course content

The main theme of this course is the relationship between people and places, with focus on why and how people and places are mutually constitutive. The course offers key concepts and theories that help us understand and analyse social difference, identity and place, as well as empirically oriented research questions related to these. For example, the course focuses on how class, gender, ethnicity and sexuality are related to place. As part of the course the students have to write an individual assignment.

Learning outcome

A student who has completed this course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

  • has knowledge about central theories and concepts within social and cultural geography which can be applied to analyze research questions within and across different research fields.

Skills:

  • is able to critically evaluate central theories and concepts within social and cultural geography, and reflect on their potential applicability.

General competency:

  • has experience with writing an academic text.

Learning methods and activities

Up to 14 hours lectures and one assignment. It is expected that compulsories and examinations are completed in English. Exceptions must be clarified with the lecturer responsible for the course.

The compulsory assignments must be completed and approved in order to be eligible to take the exam. Same form of examination is given when re-sitting for the exam or improving the grade. The exam is offered both in the autumn and spring semester.
