About the course

Course content

Description and classification of sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary textures and structures. Transport and deposition of sediments. Depositional environments and facies. Exercises consist of the microscopy of sedimentary rocks, recognition and interpretation of sedimentary structures, construction and interpretation of graphical sedimentary logs, description and interpretation of sedimentary facies and environments.

Learning outcome

Description and interpretation of origin, erosion, transport and deposition of sedimentary materials; apply basic research methods to the description and interpretation of sedimentary rocks; interpret depositional environments and lateral and vertical changes of sedimentary rocks.

Knowledge and skills

After successful completion of the course, students ought to be able to

  • Classify and describe sedimentary rocks from outcrops, hand specimens and thin sections
  • Construct and interpret graphical sedimentology logs.
  • Recognise and interpret sedimentary structures and sedimentary environments.

Learning methods and activities

Predominantly literature study and compulsory exercises. Compulsory field course. Field work may be scheduled for a weekend.

Further on evaluation

The grade in the course is based on an exam (70%) and a field course report (30%). In order to be eligible to receive a grade in the course, both assessments must receive a passing score. Students who have passed the course and would like to try to improve their grade will only re-take the exam, not the report. Students who have failed the course but passed the report will only re-take the exam.
