Course content

Structure and function of the immune system. Laboratory tasks: Antigen / Antibody reactions, Differentiate immune cells in blood using light microscopy, separating and count immunecells by specific surface markers and fluorescence microscopy.
Theoretical knowledge of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites); structure and host interaction. Laboratory tasks: cultivation and identification of bacteria and testing antibiotic resistance

Learning outcome

The student should be able to:
- Describe the immune system's structure and organization
- Describe how the cells in the immune system work and cooperate in the immune response
- Describe the structure and structure of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites) and their interaction with host.
- Describe cultivation methods and principles for identification of selected microorganisms
- be able to interpret and understand the importance of antibiotic testing
- describe the sampling and dispatch of human biological material for microbiological examination
-logging results from microbiological cultivation
- Perform work in microbiological laboratory according to current HSE rules

All practical laboratory assignments must be approved and all written submissions must be approved before one can pass the exam

In the case of applications for crediting, approving and filing of subjects from previous courses or other institutions' equivalent /similar education programs, each application will be assessed individually and the applicant must be aware of possible credit reductions in the case of overlapping subjects.

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

Required previous knowledge

Course requirements. Admission to the course requires admission to the studyprogam Bachelor in Biomedical Laboratory Science, NTNU, Trondheim .
