Course content

Human rights, Norwegian Law of Biotechnology, Mandate of The Norwegian Biotechnology Council, Ethical theory: ethics of duty, ethics of mind, ethics of consequences and ethics of care, Social-anthropology in medicine, Antonowskys theory of coherence, Ethical dilemmas in the health- and social sector, Reflection tools, Guidelines for biomedical laboratory scientists,

Working with Blood tests: collecting specimens from patients at district hospital, guided by health professionals, interprofessional work, Research ethics, regulations

Training in communication skills, knowledge about conflict negotiations, training in interdisciplinary communications and learning to understand the concept of health.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: On completion of the course students will

  • develop a holistic view on human integrity and rights.
  • obtain knowledge about Code of Ethics for Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  • obtain knowledge about ethical theory.
  • be able to understand reflection tools.
  • obtain knowledge about Norwegian Biotechnology Council.
  • obtain knowledge about interdisiplinary collaboration
  • obtain knowledge about intercultural communication
  • obtain knowledge about conflict handling

Skills: On completion of the course students will:

  • achieve ability to reveal conflicts of value, and ethical dilemmas in practical health- and social work on individual, group and societal level.
  • develop the proper attitude to patient approach.
  • develop a humanistic view in accordance with the values of health workers.
  • be able to use reflection tools.
  • be able to work inter-professionally.
  • training in interdisiplinary collaboration

General Competence: On completion of the course students will

  • be able to work within the Code of Ethics for Medical Laboratory Scientists.
  • develop an understanding of a good inter-professional work environment.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and group work including training in ethical reflection

Practical training in interaction with patients, internship in hospitals, interprofessional groups. Two mandatory individual written reflections, before and after internship in hospital.

Training in interdisiplinary collaboration

Groupdiscussions in class

Presentation of group work in class, mid-term.

Mandatory requirements to be presented for examination:

Presence (80%) in compulsory classes . Compulsory participation in group discussions

Presence (100%) in practical training period in hospitals, inclusive written "before- and after- reflections". Training period must be approved by medical laboratory scientist in hospital-laboratory.

Midterm groupwork-project including presentation for class, also including opponent groups

Mandatory written group project must be handed in one week before oral exams, to defend the text during oral exam.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required.

Required previous knowledge

HBIOA1001 Medical laboratory technology - introductory course to biomedical laboratory science (15 stp, first year of study). All compulsory work within this subject must be passed. The student cannot start HBIOA2006 without the practical prior knowledge.
