About the course

Course content

The work requirement is based on training from the first and second years of study.

The student will practice phlebotomy under the supervision of biomedical laboratory scientists. This is part of socialization to the profession, where the student will use their knowledge and skills in meeting patients. The student also gains knowledge of how laboratories handle blood samples. Practice skills in collaboration, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural communication and understanding the concept of health. Experience application of laws, ethical theories and reflection models in practice. Practice ethical sensitivity, understand their responsibility as a health professional and at the same time apply the profession's ethical guidelines in reflections on practice.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • Has knowledge of correct Phlebotomy of adults, children and newborns.

Skills

The candidate:

  • Can master capillary and venous phlebotomy of adults, and under supervision perform phlebotomy of children.
  • Communicates with patients, relatives and other healthcare professionals in a blood sample situation. Furthermore, the candidate shall contribute to security and predictability for the patient in the sampling situation.
  • Can reflect on ethical issues in connection with blood sampling

Competence

The candidate:

  • Can reflect on their own professional practice, acquire new knowledge and accept guidance
  • Understands the importance of infection control and hygiene measures in connection with patient contact and medical laboratory work

Learning methods and activities

Supervised practice in contact with patients. Practice takes place in a hospital or in primary health care under guidance of a biomedical laboratory scientist. The student must practice phlebotomy.

Submission of a reflection note after the end of the practice period.

Compulsory assignments

  • Practical blood sampling
  • Reflection note

Further on evaluation

In order to get approved internship, presence at the practice site is required for the agreed period and the student must perform phlebotomy.

In addition, confirmation of completed practice is required from the external supervisor and the reflection note must be approved.

The internship must be completed during the final year of study.

If the internship is assessed as failed, the student has access to a new internship one more time.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Biomedical Laboratory Science (BBIOING)

Required previous knowledge

Study eligibility requirements. The student must be registered in the 3rd year of BLS (must have passed at least 105 credits from the 1st and 2nd year ) and HBIOT2023 "Medical Laboratory Technology, Automation and IT in Medical Laboratories" must have been passed in order to start this course.
