About the course

Course content

The course provides an overview of how our understanding of the past emerges. Issues related to the development of the field of histroy and how history has been understood, presented and used are discussed in the course. The course is an obligatory module in the bachelor programme in history. By the end of the course it is expected that the students are able to discuss different empirical sources, make analysis based on historial knowledege, evaluate reasoning and presentation in historical texts. Students will enhance their academic writing proficiency and become familiar with the role and usage of history in society

Learning outcome

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge:
The candidate
- should know how knowledge about the past is obtained and constructed and be aware of the most common uncertainties and problems that a historian faces.
- should have knowledge about some main features in the historical field of research's development
- should know something about the most central archives and sources.
- should have knowledge about central theories and methods within the field of history
- should have knowledge of how history is written (constructed) from the source material, secondary literature up to the basic structures of historical narratives and analyses.
- should know the main problems that come with the use of historical knowledge

Skills:
The candidate
- should have some training in analyzing source material
- can put together simple sources and discuss their credibility on a basic, but professional level
- can analyze historical texts and understand the reasoning, use of sources and structure
- can present and discuss basic theoretical and methodical questions by using terms from the field of history

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and required group activity. One approved written assignment and a four-hour final exam.
