Course content

This course will give an introduction into the technology and materials, which uses in high voltage installations.

- Dimensioning criteria for high voltage insulation
- Electric field strength in various configurations
- Material technology
- Insulation technology
- Overvoltages caused by lightning
- Overvoltages due to circuit breaker operations
- Economy in the grid
- Switches / circuit breakers
- Installation technology
- Environmental impact
- Testing
- Regulations and Standards

Learning outcome

The candidate knows about
- properties of conducting materials
- properties of insulating materials
- environmental impact of materials in high voltage installations
- regulations for high voltage installations

The candidate can
- perform calculation related to economics in electric power systems
- calculate the magnetic field close to electric power lines

The candidate understands
- the functional principle av HVDC-systems

The candidate will be able to participate in constructive technical discussions within his subject area.

Supporting material allowed on exams:
- Defined simple calculator
- One sheet of paper (A4, both sides can be used) with handwritten notes/drawings

Re-sit examination will be carried out as oral examination.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
