About the course

Course content

Introduction to wireless channels (deterministic, empirical and stochastic models). Link budget, signal-to-noise ratio. Noise factor and equivalent noise temperature. Intermodulation. Superheterodyne receiver and PLL. OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). Radio access and multi-user methods. Transmission lines, reflections and Smith chart. Introduction to antennas.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - The candidate must be able to:

  • Explain basic characteristics of different wireless channel models.
  • Explain important aspects of channel quality, including noise factor, equivalent noise temperature and intermodulation.
  • Explain more advanced modulation and detection methods (OFDM).
  • Know basic radio access and multi-user methods.
  • Explain the principle of superheterodyne receivers and PLL.
  • Account for reflections and matching methods in transmission lines.
  • Explain antennas as a system component.

Skills - The candidate must be able to:

  • Do calculations on signal power and noise in communication systems.
  • Do calculations for signals on transmission lines using mathematical formulas and the Smith Chart.

General competence - The candidate must:

  • Know common terms in wireless communication.
  • Know modern measuring instruments (vector network analyzer).

Learning methods and activities

Lectures. Problem solving. Supervision.

Certain topics can be taught in English.

Written digital exam. Grade: Letter grade.

In the event of a re-sit examination in May/June, the examination may be changed to an oral examination.
