Course content
Physics: Kinematics. Newton´s laws. Work. Kinetic and potential energy. Linear momentum. Moment of inertia. Torque. Harmonic oscillator. Pressure. Buoyancy. Viscosity. Flow with loss. Oscillations including damping and resonance. Wave propagation and wave phenomena. Chemistry: Atoms and the periodic system. Chemical bond. Reactions and stoichiometry. Aggregates. Solutions. Chemical equilibrium. Acids and bases.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
The candidate
* has knowledge of basic classical mechanics, fluid mechanics, wave physics, and chemistry
* can define and explain the most important concepts within basic classical mechanics, fluid mechanics, wave physics, and chemistry
* is familiar with relevant applications in physics and chemistry
Skills:
The candidate can
* formulate and solve, with analytical and numerical methods, mathematical models for given problems related to classical mechanics, fluid mechanics, wave physics, and chemistry
* associate variables, used in idealized models, with real quantities in physics and chemistry
* conduct measurements, and analyze, interpret, and document the results
* perform calculations with quantities and units in the SI system, and is able to make transformations between different unit systems
* describe atoms and bonds between atoms
* find and use data from relevant tables
General competence:
The candidate
* can motivate and justify professional choices and convey this to others in terms of basic physics and chemistry
* participate actively in group work and professional discussions
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, exercises, laboratory work. Expected work load in the course is 300 hours. (Lectures: ca 75 hours. Exercises: ca 25 hours. Laboratory work: ca 20 hours. Self-study: ca 180 hours.)Compulsory activities: 6 of 8 physics assignments; 2 of 4 chemistry assignments and a report from laboratory work must be handed in and approved for exam admission.
