Course content

The course is built around a holistic engineering design process
1. System synthesis
* Project planning and project management
* Design for function, reliability, production, cost, etc. Life phase analysis.
* Configuration and architecture.
* Rules and regulations
2. System design and simulation
* System modelling, simulation and analysis using CAE tools
Mechanical systems desig, structural analysis, static and dynamic analysis
Hydraulic power systems design and simulation
Mechatronic systems design
* Technical documentation, product data, structure and format, PDM tools.
* Risk evaluation and analyses

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
After passed the exam the student should know the main steps and contents in a systems design process:
* systems engineering as a process, strategy and methods
* functional marine requirements - technical specifications
* navigate and apply rules and regulations
* synthesis and analysis of systems
* technical documentation
Competence:
After passing the exam the student should be able to:
* initiate, plan, execute and document a system design project using the above knowledge.
* apply advanced comoputer tools for design and analysis of multidisipline systems   
* performe dynamic simulations combining hydraulics and mechanical systems
* produce required technical documentation
General competence:
After passing the exam the student should be able to:
* perform multi-discipline projects
* apply critical sense in evaluating design analysis results

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and mandatory project work (individual).   
Assignments are mandatory and minimum 2/3 of the exercises have to be approved before access to examination.
An oral presentation of the project work must be given at the end of the semester.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
