KLH3307 - Advanced audiological rehabilitation

Course content

Students will expand their theoretical knowledge of signal processing and amplification strategies in hearing aids and cochlear implants (CI) through relevant literature. Theoretical focus on quality assurance during hearing aids and CI management, with an emphasis on the individual needs of the patient. Students will gain broad insight into issues relevant to clinical practice, as a tool for developing clinical competence, including collaboration across professions.

Knowledge

The student

  • has advanced knowledge on signal processing in hearing aids and amplification strategies for hearing aid fitting
  • has in-depth knowledge of the principles behind quality assurance in hearing aid fitting
  • has in-depth knowledge of factors influencing CI candidacy
  • has knowledge of the role of different professions in a CI team
  • has knowledge of the CI's components and various sound processing technologies
  • has in-depth knowledge of adapting CI based on the individual patient's subjective experience and needs
  • has knowledge of outcome assessments and follow-up of CI patients

Skills

The student

  • can discuss different options of signal processing and make justified choices of amplification strategies for hearing aid fitting
  • can discuss and make justified choices for quality assurance in hearing aid fitting
  • can discuss and make justified choices for the assessment of CI candidacy
  • can explain the implementation of CI adjustment, outcome assessment and follow-up

General competence

The student

  • can convey issues, analyses and conclusions within the subject area
  • can communicate and collaborate inter-professionally on issues, analyses and conclusions related to the subject area
  • can apply knowledge and skills from the subject area seen in connection with the patient's state of health and everyday function

Learning methods and activities

The teaching consists of lectures, group work, and discussions. Attendance on lectures, group work, and discussions is compulsory.

Some parts of the teaching may be given in English.

Obligatory activities

Assessed as approved / not approved and are valid in two semesters.

Oblig 1: Partcipation and presentation in seminar.

Oblig 2: Essay, 3000 words.

Exam

Home exam is a written assignment with grade scale of A - F.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Clinical Health Science (MKLIHEL)

Required previous knowledge

Corresponding admission to the 2-year master's degree in clinical health sciences, specializing in audiology: Bachelor's Degree in Audiology or similar.
