About the course
Course content
The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge about the health consequences of war, both for the combatants and for the population in general. The curriculum and teaching focus on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. An introduction is given to the consequences of war for general public health, mental health, epidemic diseases and physical injuries of warfare itself. The course has an interdisciplinary approach where the historical perspective is structuring for the course.

A candidate who passes the course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:
Knowledge:
The candidate has:
- In-depth knowledge of the health consequences of war for the combatants and the population in general.
- Knowledge of the methodological challenges of studying the health consequences of war.
- In-depth knowledge of the connections between warfare and the development of medical science from the 1800s to the present day.
- Knowledge of key medical ideas needed to understand the health consequences of war.
Skills:
The candidate should:
- Be able to assess the health consequences of war, both for the combatants and the population in general.
- Be able to use historical methods to study the health consequences of war.
- Use and analyze records and other information.
Learning methods and activities
The course is taught digitally where lectures, podcasts and other teaching materials are made available through a digital platform. This platform constitutes a digital classroom where digital meeting points are established for teaching, student-active learning, follow-up, supervising, etc.
A physical gathering is offered that is practically oriented and which may include lectures, seminar activity and group assignments.

The exam consists of an extended written term paper. The work starts early in the semester and a first draft must be approved before the term paper can be submitted as an exam answer.
