About the course

Course content

The course covers Norwegian and European art and architecture from the Renaissance to the Postmodern era. The various artworks will be discussed in light of relevant theory and method.


Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:
- basic knowledge of art and architecture from the Renaissance through today
- knowledge of the interplay between changes in society and changing modes of artistic expression
- an understanding of and the ability to explain important theoretical concepts of art history
- a familiarity with contemporary and recent scholarship in art history
- an ability to analyse works of art and architecture in light of their historical context
- sufficient knowledge of the art-historical periods to be able to participate in current arts debates

Skills
Upon successful completion of this course the student will know how to:
- analyse an artwork or a piece of architecture stylistically, place it geographically, and date it
- assess an artwork, an exhibition, or a museum display

Learning methods and activities

The class has different teaching methods, which may include lectures, seminars, and group instruction. Excursions may be included in the curriculum, but will not be mandatory. Lectures and excursions may be shared with KUH1019.

Compulsory assignments: Students must pass one or more written assignments before final assessment can be made.

The students are required to keep updated on messages from the department or teacher on Blackboard.

This course is taught in Norwegian only.

1/3 of final grade is based on a 6-day home exam, and 2/3 of the grade on a 6-hour written examination consisting of a short essay and a theoretical section. Students must achieve a passing grade in both assessments. More information will be provided by the instructor.
