About the course

Course content

How is art work from different historical periods described, analysed and interpreted by an art historian? The course gives elementary skills in analysis and interpretation of works of art. The aim of the course is to develop both interpretative as well as a critical approach towards art. The students will also get familiar with academic texts in the field of art history. Through critical reading of these texts the student will build an understanding of fundamental themes, issues and perspectives found in them. Students will write assignments in visual analysis and develop basic skills in academic writing. Through assignments students will also develop an understanding of the criteria required for an academic text in art history.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student should have:

  • basic knowledge of theoretical and methodical approach to picture, sculpture and architecture analysis
  • knowledge about the division and coherence between the form and content of the art
  • knowledge about the division between description and interpretation of art
  • knowledge about academic thinking and writing in connection with art historical objects - an understanding on how to use relevant sources and academic reference system in the field of art history

Skills

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • developing their ability to experience, interpret and comprehend art and architecture in an art historical perspective
  • acquire analytical skills of describing, characterizing and interpreting specific artwork from different periods
  • acquired practical skills of critical reflection of art historical texts, accurate use of written sources and give reference based on relevant reference system
  • developing skills in applying discipline specific and academic ways of reflecting and writing in analysis and discussing art-historical case studies

Learning methods and activities

The course consists of diverse teaching methods, like lectures, seminars or group teaching.

The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Canvas.
