About the course

Course content

Students will gain further insights into reading and writing texts, processing of information, collection of empirical data and the assessment of research and research methods within the subject area relevant to their topic. Through independent work on their Bachelor's thesis students will develop an increased familiarity with their discipline, producing a proficient presentation of their chosen topic.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have:
- in depth knowledge about their chosen subject or topic.
- knowledge about the process of carrying through an individual scientific project.

Skills
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will know how to:
- Plan and implement a independent scientific/research project, within a self chosen subject/topic.
- write and develop a academic text
- present and substantiate his/her own findings, analysis and conclusions.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminar groups and group tutorials, including supervision and feedback on Bachelor's thesis outline and draft chapters.

Group tutorials will help students develop their research questions and conduct a review of the literature relevant to their individual topics. The work of refining the research question and writing the Bachelor's thesis will be supported by group tutorials as well as individual supervision.

The organisation of seminars and group sessions will be in accordance with requirements identified on the basis of the students' chosen topics.

Compulsory assignment:
- attending the introduction lecture is compulsory
- Students must submit a project outline by the end of week 4. Supervisors will be allocated on the basis of this outline.
- The individually chosen syllabus and research question will be developed under the guidance of the supervisor. The syllabus will consist of literature relevant to the dissertation topic. By the end of week 6, a project description (approx. 2 pages long) must be sumbitted. - Students will have to meet with their supervisor at least two times before submitting the thesis.

- Students will give an oral presentation of their project, supported by written documentation, by a set deadline. They will also comment on other student's presentations.

Further on evaluation

The final assessment is made on the basis of a Bachelor’s thesis which is graded on the scale A-F. The length of the Bachelor’s thesis should not exceed 6000-8000 words. The assessment is adjusted by an oral examination, where the student will be able to defend his/her thesis.
Students who fail must retake both parts. It is not possible to write a bachelor's thesis in semesters where this course is not taught/no supervision is offered.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Art History (BKUH)

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Bachelor Programme i Art History and a specialization (a minimum of 75 ECTS) in Art History.

Course materials

Approx. 1200 pages of set texts. 300 pages form a common nucleus of course literature related to the lectures, whereas the remaining 900 minimum consists of individually chosen texts.
