Course content

The course will cover European and/or Norwegian visual arts or medieval or early-modern architecture (until the 17th century). The teaching is based on one or more art historical periods (medieval, renaissance, baroque), or possibly the reception of elderly art in early modern times. Through the examination of different types of works, the student will get an introduction to current theory and methodology. Aspects related to art such as heritage, protection or dissemination may also be highlighted.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing the course the student should have:

• In-depth knowledge of an art-historical period and its historical context
• Good understanding of the application of current academic concepts, such as protection, cultural heritage or dissemination
• Good knowledge of current theory and method
• A higher level of knowledge on subjects related to the formation, culture, reception of art, art and identity or Western civilization where applicable

Skills

After completing the course, the student will:

• be able to discuss art from a given era in European art history in an autonomous and independent way
• demonstrate an ability for independent discussion of works in light of their historical context
• be able to determine and apply relevant scientific methodology
• be able to provide an independent and critical presentation of the subject matter in writing and orally

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. Excursions can also be included in the instruction.

Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director via Blackboard.

This course is taught in Norwegian only. All activities are joint with KUH2210.

Further on evaluation

The final assessment consists of a lecture of approximately 30 minutes. The candidate will be given a topic for the lecture one week prior to the lecture date. After the lecture, the candidate answers questions from the exam commission related to the lecture.

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic courses in art history or subjects like history, archaeology or cultural history.

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the Master's programme in Art History.

The reading list comprises approximately 1400 pages, including illustrations.
