About the course

Course content

This course provides a general introduction to the understanding and management of cultural heritage. The course is an introductory course for bachelor students in Cultural Heritage Management, but is relevant for students in different academic disciplines as well. Students are provided with an introduction to important aspects of Norwegian cultural heritage management with focus on the historical development, actors in and the organisation of the field. Students also gain basic knowledge about different related fields, such as building conservation, memory studies, museology, cultural heritage studies and digital heritage. The course applies various forms of learning and teaching is close to practice in the field.

Learning outcome

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge:

  • has knowledge about the development of Norwegian cultural heritage management.
  • has knowledge about relevant legislation, actors and the organisation of cultural heritage management in Norway.
  • has an overview over different types of heritage and the management of these.
  • has basic knowledge of different academic disciplines and subjects related to heritage, such as building conservation, memory studies, cultural heritage studies, museology and digital heritage. The gained knowledge prepares for further studies in these fields.

Skills:

  • can apply theory from cultural heritage to reflect upon and discuss key issues within the field of cultural heritage.
  • has been given an introduction into academic writing.
  • has basic competence for further studies within the field.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures

2 compulsory semester assignments

Up to 10 compulsory teaching situations, including excursions, guest lectures and writing seminars.This requires a total of 75% attendance.

Compulsory assignments

  • Up to 10 compulsory teaching situations
  • 2 semester assignments

Further on evaluation

The exam consists of a multiple choice exam and a take home exam, weighted 20/80.
