About the course

Course content

The course provides a broad, theory-based introduction to the world of museums. Parts of the course will concentrate upon exhibitions and other forms of external communication, but other important museum activities will also be given attention. Whereas the main focus will be on cultural history museums and their activities, other museum and exhibition forms will also be included in the course. Visits to different museums will give the students insights into the museal field of practice and provide present-day examples to museological theory.

Learning outcome

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge:
The candidate:
- Has knowledge on the development and functions of museums.
- Is acquainted with basic theory of museology.
- Is acquainted with laws and other guidelines governing the museum field.

Skills:
The candidate:
- Has experience in analytical approaches using basic theories of museology.
- Has acquired basic demand competence within the museum field.
- Can reflect upon and discuss professional and ethical dilemmas in museum and exhibition practices.
- Is skilled in academic writing.
