Course content
This course gives a thorough introduction to selected theoretical approaches to literature and/or cultural history, in some cases from a more general standpoint of the philosophy of science. The course will focus on one or more theories or compare a range of different theories.
The course is taught in four variants related to different degree programs in language studies. Students will follow the variant taught in the language they have chosen to study. More detailed course descriptions for each of the variants offered, including learning outcomes for each variant, will be made available in the reading lists/curriculum at the beginning of the semester.

Candidates who have passed this course
- are able to explain and discuss the main characteristics of selected theoretical approaches to literature.
- can present, discuss and compare different theoretical approaches to literature.
- can discuss the relationship between different texts and theories, literature and society and how they work together.
- are able to apply selected theoretical approaches to literary texts and expressions.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures/seminars. The course is taught in the target language (the language which the student is studying). Students are expected to participate actively in the lectures/seminars for example by presentations, comments and other contributions. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.
An approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

Further on evaluation
The course is assessed by a written home examination ( approx. 4000 words, 5 days). The exam must be answered in the target language.
Recommended previous knowledge
Bachelor's degree with specialization in Nordic languages, English, French or German.
Required previous knowledge
At least 7.5 credits (studiepoeng) of courses in literature at ENG2000-, FRA2000-, NORD2000-, or TYSK2000-level.
