Course content

This course consists of work with the master thesis. Under guidance, the student designs and carries out a research project that is documented through a written assignment, the master thesis. The topic of the thesis is decided by the student together with his or her supervisor, and will vary from student to student. The student chooses an individual curriculum based on literature relevant for the thesis.

Learning outcome

Knowledge The candidate - has advanced, specialized knowledge within an area of mathematics education - has thorough knowledge about what is required from an academic text in mathematics education - has knowledge about reference standards for academic texts Skills The candidate - can, under guidance, design and carry out a research project according to current research ethical norms - can use relevant methods for research in mathematics education in an independent way - can find one's way in and be critical of different sources of information - can refer to information sources according to recognized standards - can understand literature relevant for conducting research within a specific area of mathematics education General competence The candidate - can communicate a large independent research project using the subjects forms of expression - can contribute to developing mathematics as a subject in school

Learning methods and activities

Independent work with individual/pair or group supervision.

All students must make an agreement about the completion of the master project. The agreement confirms that there is established a connection with a supervisor, that the topic of the thesis is approved and that the parties (candidate, supervisor and department) is informed about and has accepted the guidelines.

Further on evaluation

All students are entitled to write the thesis individually. However, students can write in pairs if they, themselves, put together the group and the supervisor of the group accepts it. Students who write in pairs must, before the project starts, make a written agreement. The contracting parties are the students in the group and the supervisor. In these cases, separate forms must be used.

The thesis is assessed with an external and an internal sensor. An oral exam is used to adjust the grade of the thesis and is presented in the form of a presentation and discussion of the thesis.

An overall grade is given for the written assignment and the oral component.

There will be joint assessment for the written text for those who write master thesis together. The subsequent oral exam will be held individually, and the oral component can differ for students who write in pairs.

When students write in pairs, the students must submit a document where they explain the collaboration, including the division of responsibilities.

All courses in the study program must be approved before the thesis can be submitted.
