About the course

Course content

The master's thesis is an independent scientific work that is carried out under supervision. By choosing a topic, the student will delve into theoretical and/or treatment-related issues that are relevant to the field of speech therapy. The master's thesis can be an empirical work, where a separate empirical data material (quantitative or qualitative) is obtained; an evaluation project, a theoretical assignment with discussion of one or more theories; a literature review related to a specific issue or problem field; or an innovation project/development work. The student will learn scientific work methods and scientific methods of presentation. The master's thesis must demonstrate that the student can give a nuanced, clear and precise representation of a topic area, and that he or she can communicate the research to a wider audience including professionals.

Learning outcome

After passing the exam, the student must have obtained the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding:

The student must have gained in-depth insight into a subject area in speech therapy. This includes theoretical and practical understanding of the subject area in question and knowledge of previous research in the area in question

Skills:

The student must be able to

- select, analyze and reflect on specialist literature and use it to formulate and structure professional reasoning

- use speech therapy professional knowledge and understanding through own research work in accordance with research ethical norms so that the issue, theory, method and discussions are connected as a whole

- design a text in accordance with formal requirements for scientific text production

General competence:

- knowledge of scientific thinking and work and academic presentation

Learning methods and activities

The work on the master's thesis takes place under supervision individually and in groups. You must take responsibility for the progress of your work yourself, and make arrangements for guidance meetings with your supervisor at reasonable times.

Further on evaluation

Academic requirements to be able to submit the master's thesis: To be able to sit for the exam, you must have participated in 80% of the teaching/sessions. Only one’s own and one’s child's illness or similar are valid reasons for absence. Formal requirements for the master's thesis: The master's thesis in speech therapy is weighted to 30 credits, corresponding to one semester's full-time work. The scope of the thesis must be 15,000 to 18,750 words. Two students can write an assignment together. The scope of the thesis must then be 22,500 to 26,250 words.

The students who write together must make it clear which of the two is responsible for which parts of the assignment, or alternatively stand jointly and severally for the assignment as a whole. The latter will then give a common character.

We recommend the referencing style APA. Other referencing styles can be used, but the style chosen must be used consistently in the thesis.

A student who is graded F / Failed on the master's thesis can, upon application, submit the thesis for examination a 2nd time - in a revised form. You can apply for up to 4 hours of guidance at the same time.

Master’s theses that are written in Norwegian or Scandinavian must include an abstract in English. Master’s theses that are written in a non-Scandinavian language must include an abstract in Norwegian.
