Course content

This course is composed of writing an independent assignment (FOU oppgave), part of which entails locating and reading relevant peer-reviewed sources that will be cited and referenced in the assignment. Under supervision, the student will design and execute a research project, whose findings are documented through the written assignment (i.e., FOU oppgave). The topic for the assignment is decided by the students in collaboration with the supervisors; it will therefore vary from student to student.

Knowledge

The student has

  • detailed knowledge within a limited area of English subject didactics
  • knowledge about what is required to write an academic paper in English subject didactics
  • knowledge about reference standards for academic papers
  • knowledge about central documents (e.g., the Norwegian national curriculum) and resources for the English subject
  • detailed knowledge about vocabulary acquisition and linguistic structures in English, from sound to text level
  • knowledge about a rich selection of literary texts, oral, written and visual, as well as other cultural expressions that can be used when teaching children

Skills

The student can

  • use written English, accurately and functionally, in the writing of an academic paper
  • locate, understand, refer to, and reflect on relevant English subject research literature
  • analyze, select, and adapt English-language texts in different genres for children and adolescents, and use precise and adapted terminology while working with texts
  • collect and adapt information about society, cultural topics, and cultural expressions from English-speaking countries for use in teaching including interdisciplinary projects
  • locate, understand, refer to, and reflect on relevant English subject research literature and write academic papers
  • discuss, in writing, a rich selection of fiction and non-fiction

General skills

The student can

  • critically reflect on their own learning and praxis in light of ethical values and the school's responsibility for children and adolescents' personal development
  • maintain and develop their own linguistic and didactic competence and contribute to subject development and innovation

Learning methods and activities

The FOU oppgave is an independent piece of work complemented by individual supervision. It is expected that students access academic materials for independent study, but also engage in group work outside of class and on the digital learning platform.

Obligatory assignments:

  • written plan for data collection and analysis methods
  • written summary/progress report
  • 75% attendance for all scheduled teaching.

Obligatory assignments are evaluated as approved/not approved. Obligatory assignments must be approved before the student can take an exam.

Assessment: A written individual academic paper that discusses the student's own research project (FOU oppgave). New/postponed exams are organized according to existing study regulations at NTNU.

Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education for Years 5-10 (MGLU5-10) - some programmes
