About the course
Course content
The master thesis consists of a report from a study carried out independently, which is done during the last semester of the program. This course is an obligatory part of the master degree, and should be focused on the teaching profession and oriented towards the practical work as a teacher. The thesis should have a solid basis in the subject (Norwegian Sign Language education) and the didactics of the subject. In addition, it can also focus on elements of pedagogy and special pedagogy. Knowledge about the learning situation of signing pupils should be at the center of the study, as should work on current curricula for the subject.

The candidate
- has advanced knowledge of Norwegian Sign Language as a teaching subject, and of the didactics of the subject, focusing on either GLU 1-7 or GLU 5-10
- has specialized understanding of a particular part of the subject (the theme of the master thesis)
- has thorough knowledge of relevant research and theory and scientific thinking, research methods and ethics in the subject area
Skills
The candidate
- can critically analyze national and international research and use this knowledge in their profession
- can analyze research questions in the field based on knowledge of what makes it unique, its values and history, and use this knowledge in teaching, and in research and development work
- can use research based professional knowledge in the master subject critically to develop new themes

- can analyze and evaluate relevant research questions for the subject and ethical points of view, and contribute to the professional development in their school as well as other schools
- can inform and communicate about relevant research questions for the profession at an advanced level, and has digital competency relevant to the field

Learning methods and activities
The master thesis consists of a report from a study carried out independently, with individual supervision by an appointed supervisor. The supervision will ensure that the student receives advice on literature, practical advice on data collection if needed, and that ethical guidelines for research are adhered to. This type of supervision is an obligatory part of writing a master thesis. The number of hours of supervision that are offered for MA-theses at the Faculty of the humanities is detailed here:

In addition, there is teaching in the form of lectures, group work and on the digital learning platform.
Compulsory assignments
- 80% compulsory attendance
- Approved research question and outline
- Participation in a seminar or similar activity
Further on evaluation
The exam consists of delivering the thesis and participating in a final seminar with the supervisor, the external examiner, and fellow students (if any).
The master thesis consists of a report from a study carried out independently. The thesis should be between 15,000 - 20,000 words, exclusive of foreword, list of references and appendices. New/postponed exams are only permitted in accordance with the study regulations at NTNU.
Master’s theses that are written in Norwegian or Scandinavian must include an abstract in English. Master’s theses that are written in a non-Scandinavian language must include an abstract in Norwegian.
