Course content

The course will give the student an introduction to discussions within philosophy of science and research ethics, as well as critical reflection and use of academic and other relevant sources. It will comprise the most relevant questions in philosophy of science and give a general introduction to philosophy of science and a critical attitude, related to such topics as objectivity, intersubjectivity and truth, as well as various perspectives on knowledge. The course further comprises research ethics, its history and foundations. An overview over relevant jurisdiction and guidelines will be presented, as well as practical instructions for obtaining ethical approval for research activities. At the core of the course will also be such concepts as righteousness, fraudulence and vigilance. Finally, the course will comprise critical obtainment of information, through the use research databases and reference systems, as well as exercises in critical reading and reflection when using relevant sources of information.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student will be able to

Knowledge

  • describe different perspectives within the philosophy of science and discussions concerning them
  • describe ontological and epistemological prerequisites for choosing research questions/hypotheses and research methods
  • explain the purpose of research ethics
  • identify and discuss ethical challenges within his/her area of research
  • describe what is meant by negligent or fraudulent research
  • explain the characteristics of research based and experience based knowledge •
  • distinguish between research and development

Skills

  • participate in knowledge based discussions on philosophy of science
  • recognize and handle ethical challenges that may occur in different stages of a research project
  • discuss the role of research in a good society
  • obtain knowledge systematically within his/her own area of research
  • present and give a critical assessment of scientific literature that is relevant for his/her area of research and practice

General competence

  • reflect on ontological and epistemological positions taken in scientific publications
  • assess research projects in accordance to existing law and guidelines for research ethics, including procedures for compulsory approval by ethics committees
  • interpret, analyze, and discuss professional questions based on systematic obtainment of experience based knowledge, research based knowledge and the needs of affected groups (knowledge based practice)

Learning methods and activities

Intensive lectures. Lectures and group work, including internet based studies. Lessons will be given in Gjøvik, Trondheim and Ålesund if necessary.
