About

About the course

Course content

Hydrodynamic scaling relations. Different types of model tests in marine hydrodynamics. Practical techniques for data acquisition, signal conditioning, and signal processing applied to common measurements in marine hydrodynamics model tests. Techniques for environmental modeling (wind, waves, and current). Introduction to model manufacturing techniques. Laser-based velocity measurement techniques. Uncertainty analysis. Principles for reporting. Full scale measurements. There is a credit reduction of 3.75 credits for the module TMR7 Experimental methods in marine hydrodynamics (which is a module in TMR4525 Marine Hydrodynamics, Specialization Course), as well as for TMR4300.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
To have detailed knowledge of the most common types of model tests in use in marine hydrodynamics
To have a good overview of important measurement techniques and transducer principles for relevant sensor types.
To have good understanding of scaling principles of experimental marine hydrodynamics
To understand the role of model testing in marine technology research and development.
Skills:
To be able to perform uncertainty analysis of model test results
To plan, perform and report marine hydrodynamics model tests.
General competence:
As for the study programme

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, laboratory exercises (in groups) and individual project.
Examination arrangement: Portfolio assessment, where the portfolio consists of laboratory exercises and a semester test (which together count for 25 per cent of the grade), project report (counting for 25 per cent) and an oral examination (counting for 50 per cent). In the semester test no support materials are allowed. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.

Course materials

Lecture note Steen "Experimental Methods in Marine Hydrodynamics", and papers as agreed with lecturer.
