Course content

The course includes techniques of developing motifs and composition, expanded theory of harmonics, instrumentation, and analysis.

The candidate:

  • Has knowledge about relevant and important lines of development in composing music.

Skills:

The candidate:

  • Has basic craft skills in different techniques in composing, instrumentation, notation and practical analysis.
  • can develop a musical material and compose own music in a wide specter of expressions, and for a varied ensemble.

Learning methods and activities

Group lectures and presentations, regularly throughout the academic year.

Individual guidance, regularly throughout the academic year.

Compulsory weekly rehearsal assignments. In addition, there will be at least two larger projects where the students write music that is performed by various ensembles at the department.

Further on evaluation

Home exam: The student compose a piece (durata 2-3 minutes) for a specific chamber-ensemble with a defined set of parameters for the development of the composition.

Minimum of 80% satisfactory participation in all mandatory activities in the course.

All mandatory activities must be approved before the student can have the exam.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Music Performance (MMUSP)
Music Performance Studies (BMUSP)

Required previous knowledge

Requires passed MUSP4161 or corresponding course. The student must qualify for the course on the basis of submitted works that is attached to the application.
