Course content

The course focus on musical tendencies from 1900 to 2000, with emphasis on stylistic understanding/analysis and should be relevant for the students work with his/her main instrument. Within the perspective of music history, the social aspects and cultural context of music is emphasized. The students will be trained in evaluating the factors that influences the creation of music, musical expression and the contemporary function of music.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The candidate:

  • has basic knowledge about important trends in western classical music after the year 1900
  • has knowledge about and can reflect on the various parameters of expression in music over time and genre
  • can reflect on the role music has in society and the present
  • has knowledge about the factors that influences the creation of music, musical expression and musical functionality, including how the contemporary music is related to previous musical expressions.
  • has basic and practical knowledge on some central methods of notation of western classical music after 1900

Skills:

The candidate:

  • masters a rich musical vocabulary, and can articulate musical knowledge both written and oral.
  • can provide information from different sources and the library.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures: 2 lessons a week for 12 weeks. Lectures and seminars. Activities: active listening, analysis, score reading, discussions and student presentations. Mandatory assignment must be approved before the final exam.

Further on evaluation

Semester assignment and satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction must be approved before the exam. A home exam (7 days) in the autumn semester can be a video-presentation, a written assignment or a combination of these. Digitally delivered in Inspera.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Music Performance Studies (BMUSP)

Required previous knowledge

MUSV1031 or equivalent courses.
