About the course

Course content

The course provides an introduction to both the oldest and most recent of the artistic expressions in Africa. The focal point is a culture specific anthroplogical understanding, where the integration of the art forms is highlighted. One important aspect is also the more recent, "Creolised", globalised or cross cultural varieties of expression, often categorised as World Music, World Theatre or World Literature.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2019
- has knowledge to the way African music has been described and represented since the early European Medieval Ages and till today
- has repertoire knowledge within African traditional and popular music
- has knowledge of African music theory and general sides of African music practices
- has knowledge of important theories, research methods and musicological problems regarding the study of African music
- has knowledge to relationships between newer African musical discourse and post colonial theory
- has knowledge about research on African diaspora and the globalization of African music

Skills:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2019
- can express his/her in-depth knowledge of African music as a research area in a thoughtful way, both in writing and speech
- can make his/her own reflections based on the acquired knowledge
- can independently find and orient him-/herself in newer research literature, web sites and works of reference regarding African music
