About the course

Course content

The academic content of the course, i.e. topic and theory will vary from one academic year to another. The course provides a study of a selection of Scandinavian literary works and a selection of relevant theoretical texts.

Learning outcome

Candidates will have obtained the following qualifications after successfully completing this course:

Knowledge

  • theoretic and historic knowledge of the relationship between literature and scientific discourses

Skills

  • the ability to make use of reflect on theoretical-methodological approaches within a limited area of literary science
  • the ability to analyse texts in context, such as an authorship or a literary work, a theme or a theoretical perspective
  • the knowledge that is required in order to search for and assess relevant academic texts of a subject field
  • the ability to develop and discuss a question within a specific field of literary science

Learning methods and activities

Seminars.

Obligatory assignments: Up to 3 written assignments (determined by lecturer). Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

Assessment: Take home exam, 7 days, approx. 4000 words.

Course materials

The reading list shall consist of 6-7 works with at least one theoretical work. (A theoretical work is equivalent to approx. 150 pages). A reading list will be available on the first day of class. The curriculum could center on e.g. one authorship, a literary epoch, a genre, a theme or theoretical perspective. It is expected that the students read necessary secondary literature in connection to the literary texts on the reading list.
