About the course

Course content

An academic thesis on a linguistic or literary topic of approx. 15 000-20 000 words in Norwegian, excluding the preface, reference list and appendices. The student chooses the subject and method with guidance from his/her academic adviser. One may choose a didactic approach to the topic. The thesis must include an appendix of up to 1 page in which the student explains the relevance of the work for the teaching profession. All students must also write an abstract of the thesis in English, which should be ½-1 page and placed first in the thesis.

The candidate:

  • can complete an independent work of research on a specialized topic under the guidance of an academic supervisor
  • masters scientific argumentation and critical thinking
  • can present scientific problems and results extensively in writing
  • fulfills the requirements of scientific publishing

Learning methods and activities

Teaching method:

Self-study, seminars (master thesis seminar), and individual supervision throughout the course.

Obligatory assignments:

Approved project draft (approx. 5 pages)

At least one supervision session, individually or in groups, after the project draft is approved.

Assessment:

An academic thesis of approx. 30 000-35 000 words written in Norwegian. All students must write an abstract of the thesis in English. The abstract should be ½-1 page and placed first in the thesis. The thesis will be submitted in the last semester of study, unless another arrangement is made with the adviser and department. Further on evaluation

It is not possible for students who have been awarded a passing grade for the master's thesis in Scandinavian studies to have a new master's thesis in Scandinavian studies assessed (cf. the academic regulations for NTNU, §5-9). Students whose master's thesis has been assessed as a Fail (F) may apply to the department to submit a new thesis (cf. the additional academic regulations of the Faculty of Humanities).

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the master's programme in Language Studies with Teacher Education (MLSPRÅK), specialization in Scandinavian Studies, or Master's Degree with integrated Postgraduate Certificate in Education (MPPU), specliaization in Scandinavian Studies.
