Course content
Level 1 is a language course for beginners or students with very little previous knowledge of Norwegian. The course focuses on basic Norwegian grammar and use of everyday language in both oral and written production.
Learning outcome
KNOWLEDGE:
The candidate has basic knowledge about grammatical rules of inflexion and word order:
- Verbs: the infinitive, present, preterite, present perfect, imperative
- Nouns: gender, number, indefinite and definite forms
- Adjectives: agreement and comparison
- Pronouns: subject and object forms, reflexive pronouns and possessives
- Word order in main clauses and subordinate clauses
SKILLS:
The candidate:
- has a language skill level equivalent to Level A2/B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- masters a basic vocabulary of Norwegian everyday language and grammatical rules for inflection and word order
- can write assignments focusing on descriptive and narrative texts in the past, present and future tenses on topics that are known to him and of personal interest. The candidate can describe experiences and impressions
Learning methods and activities
Up to 6 hours of seminars/group work per week, including listening exercises. Students need up to five approved obligatory activities in order to sit the exam.
Attendance is compulsory for the first lecture, and the overall attendance requirement is 80 per cent.

- 80% attendance (mandatory attendance in the first teaching session)

The exam is a combination of an oral and a written exam.
The written exam includes a dictation/listening test, grammar exercises and an essay. The written exam will be in Norwegian Bokmål. The oral exam is 10 to 15 minutes. Dictionaries are not allowed.
Separate grades are given for the written and the oral exam. The written exam counts 2/3 while the oral exam counts 1/3 of the final grade. Both the written and the oral exam need to be passed in order to pass the exam. Students must retake both parts if they fail either part.
Approved examination requirements are valid for 4 semesters.
