About the course
Course content
At the end of this course, students should be read and understand simple texts from newspapers. Writing skills in both descriptive and narrative genres are further developed, and towards the end of the course students should also be able to write simple persuasive texts.
The course focuses on developing students' everyday vocabulary. Upon completing the course, students can give clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to their fields of interest. They will be able to have a conversation on a variety of current topics with relative ease.
Learning outcome
KNOWLEDGE:
The candidate´s level of knowledge is equivalent to Level B1/B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
SKILLS:
The candidate:
- masters a vocabulary that enables him to give clear descriptions and express his meaning about most everyday issues
- uses complex sentences
- can use different techniques to create coherence when writing
- can write simple persuasive texts
Learning methods and activities
Up to 6 hours of seminars/group work per week, including listening exercises. Students need up to five approved obligatory activities in order to sit the exam.
Attendance is compulsory for the first lecture, and the overall attendance requirement is 80 percent.

- 80% attendance (mandatory attendance in the first teaching session)
Further on evaluation
The exam is a combination of an oral and a written exam.
The written exam tests comprehension (e.g. dictation), grammar, vocabularies and text writing. The written exam will be in Norwegian Bokmål. The oral exam is 15 minutes. Dictionaries are not allowed.
Separate grades are given for the written and the oral exam. The written exam counts 2/3 while the oral exam counts 1/3 of the final grade. Both the written and the oral exam need to be passed in order to pass the exam. Students must retake both parts if they fail either part.
Approved examination requirements are valid for 4 semesters.

Norwegian for Foreigners (NFUT)
Required previous knowledge
Passed Norwegian level 1 or Placement test or Norskprøven with B1 in the written part and A2 in the other parts.
